Starting something new can feel intimidating – especially when it involves unfamiliar equipment, a method you’ve never tried, and a room full of people who seem to know exactly what they’re doing. If you’ve been curious about Pilates but haven’t taken the leap yet, this post is for you.
Here’s exactly what to expect at your first Pilates class in Austin at Sharp Pilates.
We Practice Classical Romana’s Pilates – Here’s What That Means
Sharp Pilates teaches classical Romana’s Pilates, the method passed directly from Joseph Pilates through his protégé Romana Kryzanowska. This is the original Pilates method – not a modern variation, not a fusion format, not a cardio class with Pilates in the name.
What that means for your first class: every exercise you learn is part of a deliberate, time-tested sequence designed to work the entire body in a specific order. Nothing is random. Everything builds on itself.
What to Wear
Wear form-fitting, comfortable clothing you can move freely in. Avoid anything too loose – your instructor needs to see your alignment and body position to give you accurate corrections.
What to Bring
Keep it simple. Water and yourself. You don’t need to bring a mat, towel, or any equipment – everything is provided at the studio.
What Happens in a Group Class
Group classes at Sharp Pilates are small by design. You’ll work through the classical Pilates sequence on authentic Gratz apparatus – primarily the reformer – with guidance from your instructor throughout.
Your first class will feel like a lot of information. That’s completely normal. The classical method has its own vocabulary, its own rhythm, and its own way of asking your body to move. Give yourself permission to be a beginner. The sequence becomes familiar quickly, and the progress you feel from class to class is one of the most rewarding parts of the practice.
Classes move at a steady pace and your instructor will offer hands-on corrections and make modifications where needed. You won’t be left to figure it out on your own.
What to Expect in a Private Session
If you’re brand new to Pilates, we recommend starting with our intro offer – three private sessions for $300. Private sessions give you dedicated one-on-one time with an instructor to learn the foundational exercises, understand the equipment, and build the body awareness that makes group classes more effective.
Many of our clients find that a few private sessions before joining group classes makes the transition much smoother. You’ll walk into your first group class knowing the basics – which means you can focus on the work instead of the learning curve.
Will It Be Hard?
Yes – in the best way. Classical Pilates is a genuine physical practice. You will feel muscles you didn’t know you had. You may find that exercises that look simple are surprisingly challenging. That’s by design.
The method meets you where you are. Whether you’re a complete beginner, an athlete, or returning after an injury or a long break, the classical sequence can be adapted to your current level while still being appropriately challenging.
What Happens After Your First Class
Most people leave their first class feeling a combination of accomplished, humbled, and curious. The work is unlike anything else, and it tends to get under your skin quickly.
We encourage new clients to commit to at least three sessions before making a judgment – the first class is always an orientation. By the third, you’ll start to feel the method working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Wear form-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows your instructor to see your alignment and body position clearly. Avoid anything too loose.
No. Everything is provided at the studio, you just need water and yourself.
Not usually. Your first class is really an orientation. We recommend committing to at least three sessions before judging the method, since that’s typically when it starts to click.
Most new clients start with a private session so an instructor can teach the fundamentals one-on-one. Our intro offer, 3 private sessions for $300, is built for exactly this.
