What to Wear to Pilates: A Simple Guide for First-Timers

If you’re getting ready for your first Pilates session and wondering what to wear to Pilates in Austin, the short answer is: wear what you’re comfortable in. You don’t need to go shopping, you don’t need a specific brand, and you don’t need to wear anything that doesn’t feel like you. Here’s what actually matters — and a few practical things to keep in mind.

The Main Requirement: Clothes You Can Move In

Pilates involves a range of movement – lying down, sitting, kneeling, reaching overhead, and sometimes inverting. Whatever you wear, make sure it moves with you without restricting your range of motion. Do a quick check before you leave home: can you comfortably bring your knees to your chest, reach your arms overhead, and lie flat on your back? If yes, you’re good.

Beyond that, it helps if your clothing stays put during movement – tops that ride up when you lie down or pants that shift around on the Reformer carriage can be distracting mid-session. But this is a comfort consideration, not a dress code.

What to Wear to Pilates in Austin: Good Options

Bottoms. Leggings, joggers, athletic shorts, biker shorts – all work well. The main thing is that they don’t bunch up or slide when you’re on the Reformer carriage. Full-length leggings and capris tend to stay put the best, but wear what you feel good in.

Tops. A fitted tank, a relaxed t-shirt, or a lightweight long-sleeve all work. If you tend to wear a longer top, tucking it in slightly can help if you find it moves around when you’re lying down – but this is entirely up to you.

Socks. You’ll want socks. Grip socks are great if you have them, but regular socks work fine. We ask that clients don’t go barefoot on the equipment. Shoes stay at the door.

A Note on Alignment Cueing

Your instructor will cue you through every movement regardless of what you’re wearing. That said, when your instructor can see the shape of your body more clearly, it can mean more specific visual feedback on things like hip alignment or knee tracking. If you prefer more coverage, your instructor will rely more on touch and verbal cues – which is completely normal and works just as well. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and we’ll work with it.

What to Skip

Belts, buckles, or metal at the waist. You’ll be lying on the Reformer carriage, so hardware at the waist is uncomfortable. An elastic waistband is all you need.

Heavy perfume or fragrance. The studio is a shared space. Light or none is appreciated.

Dangling jewelry. Stud earrings are fine. Anything that might catch on equipment or pull during movement is worth leaving at home.

Anything that makes you feel self-conscious. Come in something you feel like yourself in. The work is what matters, not the outfit.

What About Grip Socks?

Grip socks add traction on the footbar and carriage and are popular in most Pilates studios. If you have a pair, bring them. If not, regular socks are fine for your first session – no need to buy anything new before you come in. Brands like ToeSox, Tavi Noir, and Pilates Paws make good options in the $15 to $25 range if you decide you want a pair.

Do I need grip socks for Pilates?

Grip socks are helpful but not required for your first session. Regular socks work fine. If you decide Pilates is for you, grip socks are a worthwhile investment – brands like ToeSox, Tavi Noir, and Pilates Paws make good options in the $15 to $25 range.

Can I wear leggings to Pilates?

Yes – fitted leggings are the ideal choice. Full-length or capri leggings both work well. Avoid wide-leg or flowy styles, which shift around on the Reformer carriage and make it harder for your instructor to see your alignment.

Should I wear shoes or go barefoot for Pilates?

Neither – Pilates is done in socks. At Sharp Pilates™, we ask that you don’t go barefoot on the equipment. Grip socks are ideal, but regular socks are fine. Leave your shoes at the door.

What should I avoid wearing to Pilates?

Avoid belts or metal hardware at the waist (uncomfortable when lying on the carriage), loose or baggy clothing (prevents your instructor from seeing your alignment), heavy perfume, and dangling jewelry that might catch on equipment.
