What Is Pilates?

Who Was Joseph Pilates?
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. A sickly child, he became determined to overcome his physical ailments through movement, eventually mastering gymnastics, boxing, and self-defense. During World War I, he developed his unique exercise method while interned in England, helping rehabilitate injured soldiers using springs attached to hospital beds – a precursor to what we now know as the Pilates Reformer.
After the war, Joseph immigrated to New York City and opened a studio with his wife Clara. There, dancers, athletes, and performers sought him out for his transformative work. His method gained a loyal following, especially in the dance community.
The Evolution and Preservation of Classical Pilates
Since Joseph’s passing in 1967, his method has been passed down through a dedicated lineage of instructors. At Sharp Pilates™ in Austin, we follow the Romana’s Pilates Method, the most direct and authentic continuation of Joe’s original system. This classical approach ensures that the exercises, equipment, and teaching methods remain as close as possible to how Joseph intended.
